I am honored and humbled to serve as your 2016-2017 HCSNA President!

I come from a family of Hispanic migrant workers, who came to the USA with the hopes of providing me with a better life. Born and raised in Salinas, CA, I have always been influenced by my community and family's natural healing practices.

I am currently pursuing my nursing education here at Hartnell College and CSUMB with the end result of obtaining an ADN and BSN. Prior to nursing school, I had no medical background, only volunteer experience and a lifelong dream of becoming a nurse. My goal is to become an OR nurse and eventually dedicate myself to health care policy and research by being that influential nursing voice in legislation!

Beyond a nursing student, I am a mother, a wife, volunteer, and licensed massage therapist for the Spa at Pebble Beach. I enjoy traveling anywhere where there's nature (Tahoe!) or the Tour Eiffle, going to the spa, and food #WeEatCakeOnThursday. Most importanly, I love spending time with my family and celebrating the gift of life!

My Nursing Interests: Operating Room Nurse, Policy and Research, and Nurse Educator.

Student Bio Coming Soon...

I was born into  a family of nurses, but it took me quite a while to realize that this was the profession for me. I attended Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo where I earned by B.S. in psychology.  While there I completed various internships but was particularly drawn to multicultural psychology and the authenticity of therapeutic communication. I wanted to make this my career and was planning on getting my masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy.  However, as I was wrapping up the last psychology class of my degree, I found myself thinking about nursing a lot.  The more I looked into it, the more I realized that I needed to be a nurse. Nursing school has provided me with the chance to be with patients in their most authentic moments.  I have been able to carry out the helping role I was drawn to, while also being continuously challenged by the complexities of patient care.  My experiences at Hartnell College have reaffirmed my decision to pursue nursing one-hundred times over.  This program has been my greatest academic challenge, but it has also been an immense learning experience.  I have grown and matured significantly over the past year.  I’ve been humbled while simultaneously becoming more confident.  I have developed a close bond with my cohort and learned the true value of teamwork and collaboration.  I am so happy to be where I am today, and genuinely look forward to providing nursing care in the Salinas Valley.  I hope to work in the ICU, where I will be challenged by high acuity patients, and provided the opportunity to engage in my lifelong passion of continued learning.

Greetings. My name is Lauren Miller and I am a 3rd Semester RN student at Hartnell Community College (current Secretary of the Student Nursing Association) as well a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) student at CSUMB. Salinas has been my home all 23 years of my life, but I never imagined serving this community as a nurse. My nursing journey began when I accidently walked into a nursing informational meeting and stayed to listen as nursing students discussed their experiences. I became intrigued by the mesh of art and science in nursing. Two years later upon completion of my prerequisite classes, I learned I was accepted into CSUMB and Hartnell; I deferred from Hartnell for 1 year to complete the majority of my BSN classes in subjects such as research, health policy and statistics. My interest in emergency medicine and trauma blossomed after becoming certified as an EMT in 2014. This interest was cemented after being involved in a “code blue” during second semester; I recall being awestruck by the highly competent team of nurses and doctors who resuscitated a dying patient (and allowed me to preform CPR).  Nursing has been more than just a degree for me. It has challenged me, allowed me to assist patients in a rough time in their life, and also given me the confidence to believe that I am intelligent and capable. See you on the floor!
